What you'll learn
About this course
Family, holidays, the past and your plans — a giỗ in Cần Thơ, the Mekong Delta, Tết in Sài Gòn and a visitor from Hà Nội.
One continuing story: Ben, an Australian who moved to Sài Gòn for work, his friend Mai and the neighbours of his hẻm — cô Sáu, anh Tuấn, Vy and chú Bảy — so every new word comes back in real situations.
The 10 lessons
1. Going home for a death anniversary — Ben and friends travel to Cần Thơ for an anniversary. Learners discuss directions, ask about trips, and address relatives using words like giỗ, thắp nhang, and anh họ.
2. The anniversary at dì Út's — At dì Út's anniversary party, learners discuss traditions, compare past and present lives, and politely ask elders about the past using nhậu nhẹt, say xỉn, and vất vả.
3. Telling what happened — When a bus breaks down, learners recount road incidents chronologically and describe ongoing past actions using vocabulary like trục trặc, nổ vỏ, xẹp lép, and tấp vô.
4. A Mekong Delta holiday — Visiting the Ngã Bảy floating market, learners can trade, describe trips around islets, and use directional words like lên, xuống, ra, vô, alongside terms like chợ nổi and ghe.
5. Tết in Sài Gòn — Celebrating Tết in Sài Gòn, learners offer New Year wishes, discuss family customs, and describe festive preparations using words like giao thừa, pháo bông, and múa lân.
6. Listening to Northerners — While discussing a Northern friend, learners practice understanding Northern accents in simple contexts, recognizing dialectal differences, and discussing street food using vocabulary like phương ngữ and lạ tai.
7. Plans — Discussing plans with boss Phúc, learners talk about future intentions, plan work tasks, and ask for permission using words like phát triển, sự nghiệp, and khởi nghiệp.
8. Childhood — Sharing memories at an eatery, learners compare their childhood with the present and discuss personal changes using vocabulary like hồi nhỏ, ngây thơ, phá phách, and trốn học.
9. Review 1 & 2 — Through a board game recalling recent events, learners revise directions, time structures, and vocabulary from lessons 1 to 8 by chaining stories and handling unexpected communication stations.
10. May party — Level 8 test — At cô Hồng's party, learners complete the Level 8 test through a listening track, a role-play with twists, a short retell, and a written exam.
What you get
Inside every lesson: an illustrated student book (35–45 pages), native Southern Vietnamese recordings at two speeds (slow and natural), 24 interactive activities (dictation, listening, role-play with a twist, flashcards, tones and pronunciation, games) and a teacher guide your SVFF teacher follows page by page.
How it works
28 live hours with your SVFF teacher, plus about the same time of self-study. Lessons 1–8 have three 60-minute sessions each (input, skills, production); lesson 9 is a review and lesson 10 the level test (two sessions each). Passing the level test moves you up to Level 9.
Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese only: the words and the accent you hear in the street, the market and the office.
Requirements
- You finished Level 7 (B1 Book 2), or your teacher placed you at this level.
- A computer, tablet or phone with internet, and headphones for the recordings.
- About one hour of self-study for every hour of class (activities, recordings, homework).
Goals
- Talk about your family and relatives, and address them correctly on the father's and the mother's side.
- Tell stories about the past and compare then and now (hồi đó, hồi xưa, hồi nhỏ … còn bây giờ).
- Narrate an event in order (lúc … đang, sau khi … rồi) and say where people go (ra / vô / lên / xuống).
- Take part in Tết and family customs, and talk about your plans (định, tính, dự định, sẽ … trong vòng).
- Recognise Northern speech (nhé, nhỉ, vâng, cốc, bát …) while you keep speaking Southern.
Who this course is for
- Adults learning Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese for daily life, work or family
- Learners who finished Level 7 (B1 Book 2) or placed at B1 in the SVFF level check
- People who want the Vietnamese that Sài Gòn really speaks, with a native Southern teacher
Your Instructor
SVFF is a Vietnamese language school in Ho Chi Minh City. We have taught Vietnamese to English speakers since 2018 — most of them partners, spouses and family of Vietnamese people, learning the language of the people they love. Our courses are built and taught by native teachers from both ends of the country, because Vietnamese is not one accent. What you hear in Hà Nội is not what you hear in Sài Gòn, and a learner who only ever meets one of them gets stuck the moment they travel. We teach the language as it is actually spoken.
