What you'll learn
About this course
Courses, banks, apartments, neighbours, tailors, messages and money — life in your second year in Sài Gòn.
One continuing story: Ben, an Australian who moved to Sài Gòn for work, his friend Mai and the neighbours of his hẻm — cô Sáu, anh Tuấn, Vy and chú Bảy — so every new word comes back in real situations.
The 10 lessons
1. Signing up for a course — At a language centre, learners enroll in courses, ask for information, and order street snacks, using words like học phí, chứng chỉ, cơ bản, nâng cao, and mỡ hành.
2. At the bank — Khoa helps Ben at a bank, teaching learners to fill forms, handle transactions, and understand số dư or hạn mức, while using "mà" to clarify objects or people.
3. Apartment living — Visiting an apartment, learners discuss phí quản lý, understand rules, and request maintenance for issues like a leaking roof using structures like nhờ, bảo, or khiến.
4. Neighbours — Dealing with a neighbour in Gò Vấp, learners resolve conflicts, address deafening noise, and tactfully give reminders using words like láng giềng, mâu thuẫn, inh ỏi, and nhắc khéo.
5. Clothes & tailoring — At a tailor shop, learners can order made-to-measure shirts, compare clothing designs, and handle returns, learning vocabulary like may đo, sơ mi, y chang, and vòng eo.
6. Passing on messages — During a video call, learners practice passing on messages, calling in sick, and correcting misunderstandings using workplace vocabulary like sốt siêu vi, hiểu lầm, đính chính, and chuyển lời.
7. Managing money — Planning a trip at a café, learners discuss spending, splitting costs, and borrowing money, mastering financial terms such as chi tiêu, sinh hoạt phí, phung phí, and nợ.
8. A farewell party — At a farewell party for a promoted colleague, learners recall memories, say goodbye, and give gifts, practicing emotional vocabulary like chia tay, dặn dò, thăng tiến, and bùi ngùi.
9. Review 1 & 2 — Before a year-end party, learners revise the first eight lessons by completing conversational chains, passing on messages, and handling surprise scenarios to ensure their storytelling remains cohesive.
10. Year-end party — Level 7 test — At a year-end party, learners complete a test evaluating their skills via a listening track, a speaking role-play, an oral retelling task, and a written sentence section.
What you get
Inside every lesson: an illustrated student book (35–45 pages), native Southern Vietnamese recordings at two speeds (slow and natural), 24 interactive activities (dictation, listening, role-play with a twist, flashcards, tones and pronunciation, games) and a teacher guide your SVFF teacher follows page by page.
How it works
28 live hours with your SVFF teacher, plus about the same time of self-study. Lessons 1–8 have three 60-minute sessions each (input, skills, production); lesson 9 is a review and lesson 10 the level test (two sessions each). Passing the level test moves you up to Level 8.
Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese only: the words and the accent you hear in the street, the market and the office.
Requirements
- You finished Level 6 (B1 Book 1), or your teacher placed you at this level.
- A computer, tablet or phone with internet, and headphones for the recordings.
- About one hour of self-study for every hour of class (activities, recordings, homework).
Goals
- Pass on what other people said (reported speech: nói là, bảo, hỏi … có … không).
- Describe people, things and events in detail with mà clauses.
- Solve everyday and housing problems: negotiate, call a repairer, contact building management.
- Express regret and conditions with giá mà / phải chi and hễ … là.
- Follow the main ideas of a natural-speed two-person Southern conversation on everyday topics.
Who this course is for
- Adults learning Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese for daily life, work or family
- Learners who finished Level 6 (B1 Book 1) or placed at B1 in the SVFF level check
- People who want the Vietnamese that Sài Gòn really speaks, with a native Southern teacher
Your Instructor
SVFF is a Vietnamese language school in Ho Chi Minh City. We have taught Vietnamese to English speakers since 2018 — most of them partners, spouses and family of Vietnamese people, learning the language of the people they love. Our courses are built and taught by native teachers from both ends of the country, because Vietnamese is not one accent. What you hear in Hà Nội is not what you hear in Sài Gòn, and a learner who only ever meets one of them gets stuck the moment they travel. We teach the language as it is actually spoken.
