Home, habits, weather, doctors, getting around and big numbers — daily life in Sài Gòn.
What you'll learn
About this course
Home, habits, weather, doctors, getting around and big numbers — daily life in Sài Gòn.
One continuing story: Ben, an Australian who moved to Sài Gòn for work, his friend Mai and the neighbours of his hẻm — cô Sáu, anh Tuấn, Vy and chú Bảy — so every new word comes back in real situations.
The 10 lessons
1. Finding a place to live — Ben views apartments with Mai and a broker. You can state housing requirements, compare places, and ask about deposits, using căn, tòa, các, những, and không bằng.
2. In my home — Vy and chú Bảy help Ben move in. You can describe rooms, instruct where to place furniture, and report broken items, using tất cả, đều, and position words.
3. What do you do in your free time? — Tuấn and Ben discuss habits at the canteen. You can describe daily routines and frequency, and ask about schedules, using thỉnh thoảng, mỗi, and có khi nào không.
4. Likes & dislikes — The team picks a restaurant for dinner based on preferences. You can express likes or dislikes, state exceptions, and invite opinions, using chẳng hạn như, ngoài ra, and trừ.
5. Today's weather — The team changes their trip plans due to a storm. You can understand forecasts and plan around the weather, using trời, định, nếu thì, and weather vocabulary.
6. Booking a doctor's appointment — Ben books medical appointments for himself and cô Sáu. You can schedule visits, describe mild symptoms, and understand receptionists, using trước khi, sau khi, bị, and được.
7. Getting around the city — Ben books a Grab and directs the lost driver. You can direct drivers, take the bus, and pay fares, using chạy thẳng, quẹo, tới, ngừng, and cách bao xa.
8. Big numbers & percentages — Ben buys a phone and manages his budget. You can state big numbers, percentages, and estimate amounts, using triệu, tỷ, rưỡi, khoảng, gần, hơn, chưa tới, and so với.
9. Review of lessons 1–8 — Mai rents Ben's old room while everyone helps her. This lesson reviews describing homes, daily habits, weather plans, scheduling, and giving directions using structures from lessons one to eight.
10. Level 4 test — Mai hosts a housewarming party. This test evaluates your skills through a listening section, a role-play speaking task with a twist, describing a house, and writing four short sentences.
What you get
Inside every lesson: an illustrated student book (35–45 pages), native Southern Vietnamese recordings at two speeds (slow and natural), 24 interactive activities (dictation, listening, role-play with a twist, flashcards, tones and pronunciation, games) and a teacher guide your SVFF teacher follows page by page.
How it works
26 live hours with your SVFF teacher, plus about the same time of self-study. Each lesson has two 60-minute sessions with your teacher; lesson 9 is a review and lesson 10 the level test. Passing the level test moves you up to Level 5.
Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese only: the words and the accent you hear in the street, the market and the office.
Requirements
- You finished Level 3 (A2 Book 1), or your teacher placed you at this level.
- A computer, tablet or phone with internet, and headphones for the recordings.
- About one hour of self-study for every hour of class (activities, recordings, homework).
Goals
- Describe a home or a room and find a place to rent: compare two, ask about the deposit, bills and contract.
- Talk about habits, how often you do things and what you like, and ask others the same.
- Understand a simple weather forecast and change plans because of the weather.
- Book a doctor's appointment and get around by Grab or bus with clear directions.
- Say and understand big numbers, percentages, discounts and instalments.

Your Instructor
SVFF is a Vietnamese language school in Ho Chi Minh City. We have taught Vietnamese to English speakers since 2018 — most of them partners, spouses and family of Vietnamese people, learning the language of the people they love. Our courses are built and taught by native teachers from both ends of the country, because Vietnamese is not one accent. What you hear in Hà Nội is not what you hear in Sài Gòn, and a learner who only ever meets one of them gets stuck the moment they travel. We teach the language as it is actually spoken.
