What you'll learn
About this course
Your first month in Sài Gòn: introduce yourself, say your nationality, tell the time and order at a café.
One continuing story: Ben, an Australian who moved to Sài Gòn for work, his friend Mai and the neighbours of his hẻm — cô Sáu, anh Tuấn, Vy and chú Bảy — so every new word comes back in real situations.
The 10 lessons
1. Greetings & names — At work, greet people and introduce yourself or colleagues appropriately, using structures like đây là, words like đồng nghiệp, giới thiệu, and Southern pronouns like ảnh, chỉ, cổ.
2. Nationality & languages — With Mai and anh Tuấn, say your nationality and basic language skills using terms like người Úc, tiếng Việt, nước nào, giỏi, hơi, and the particle thôi.
3. Jobs & the workplace — At công ty Xanh, ask and talk about jobs, departments, and availability, utilizing vocabulary like công ty, nhân viên, kế toán, làm việc, bận, rảnh, and văn phòng.
4. Numbers & prices — Shopping with anh Hùng, count up to 1,000, discuss prices, and pick items within budget using words like trăm, mắc, rẻ, mua, đẹp, and classifiers like cái.
5. Addresses & locations — Near the post office, identify locations, state addresses, and share phone numbers using vocabulary like địa chỉ, đường, kế bên, đối diện, bưu điện, and rút tiền.
6. Time & work schedules — Discussing schedules with Mai and Tuấn, ask the time and describe daily work routines using phrases like mấy giờ, rưỡi, kém, buổi sáng, trễ, and sớm.
7. A day in the life — Sharing routines with Ben, Mai, and anh Tuấn, talk about daily activities and frequencies using words like thức dậy, ăn sáng, luôn luôn, thường xuyên, and ít khi.
8. At the café — At a quán cà phê, order drinks with classifiers, understand menu prices, and express feelings using words like tô, chén, thực đơn, đói, no, and khát.
9. Review — Walking past familiar spots like chợ Bến Thành, revise handling communication stations by combining previous structures for greetings, occupations, shopping prices, counting numbers, stating locations, and time.
10. Level 1 test — Meeting chị Linh at công ty Xanh, test four skills through a written paper, listening clip, role-playing drink orders, and narrating daily schedules to prove Level 1 ability.
What you get
Inside every lesson: an illustrated student book (35–45 pages), native Southern Vietnamese recordings at two speeds (slow and natural), 24 interactive activities (dictation, listening, role-play with a twist, flashcards, tones and pronunciation, games) and a teacher guide your SVFF teacher follows page by page.
How it works
20 live hours with your SVFF teacher, plus about the same time of self-study. Each lesson has two 60-minute sessions with your teacher; lesson 9 is a review and lesson 10 the level test. Passing the level test moves you up to Level 2.
Southern (Sài Gòn) Vietnamese only: the words and the accent you hear in the street, the market and the office.
Requirements
- You finished Level 0 (A0), or your teacher placed you at this level.
- A computer, tablet or phone with internet, and headphones for the recordings.
- About one hour of self-study for every hour of class (activities, recordings, homework).
Goals
- Introduce yourself and others at work, and use anh/em appropriately.
- Say your nationality, languages you know, and your job.
- Understand and say numbers from 0 to 1,000, and ask for prices.
- Give an address and a phone number, and say the time and your daily routine.
- Order food and drinks at a café using classifiers.

Your Instructor
SVFF is a Vietnamese language school in Ho Chi Minh City. We have taught Vietnamese to English speakers since 2018 — most of them partners, spouses and family of Vietnamese people, learning the language of the people they love. Our courses are built and taught by native teachers from both ends of the country, because Vietnamese is not one accent. What you hear in Hà Nội is not what you hear in Sài Gòn, and a learner who only ever meets one of them gets stuck the moment they travel. We teach the language as it is actually spoken.
