Scenario Practice — Real Conversations with AI

What Is Scenario Practice?

Scenario Practice is a feature on SVFF that lets you have realistic Vietnamese conversations with an AI partner. Instead of studying words in isolation, you practice using Vietnamese the way you would in real life — ordering food at a restaurant, bargaining at a market, or chatting with a colleague at work.

You can find it at /practice/scenarios from the main menu.

Types of Scenarios

We offer a growing library of everyday situations, including:

  • Ordering food — at a restaurant, street food stall, or coffee shop
  • Shopping at the market — asking prices, bargaining, and choosing items
  • Meeting friends — greetings, introductions, and making plans
  • At the office — asking questions, scheduling meetings, small talk with coworkers
  • Getting around — taking a taxi, asking for directions, buying tickets
  • At the doctor or pharmacy — describing symptoms, understanding instructions

New scenarios are added regularly based on student requests and common travel situations in Vietnam.

How to Start a Scenario

  1. Browse the scenario list and pick a topic that interests you.
  2. Select your difficulty level (see below).
  3. Press Start Conversation to begin.
  4. The AI will play a character — a waiter, shopkeeper, friend, or colleague — and the conversation begins naturally.

You type or speak your responses in Vietnamese, and the AI replies in character, keeping the conversation going just like a real interaction.

Difficulty Levels

Each scenario is available at three difficulty levels, mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

  • Beginner (A1-A2) — Simple vocabulary, short sentences, slower pace. The AI uses basic words and gives you hints when you get stuck.
  • Intermediate (B1-B2) — More natural speech, wider vocabulary, and some idiomatic expressions. The AI expects fuller responses.
  • Advanced (C1-C2) — Fast-paced, natural conversation with slang, regional expressions, and complex grammar. Minimal hand-holding.

AI Characters and Personas

In each scenario, the AI takes on a specific role with a name, personality, and speaking style. For example, you might talk to "Chi Lan," a friendly market vendor in Ho Chi Minh City, or "Anh Minh," a formal office manager in Hanoi. This makes the practice feel more authentic and helps you get used to different Vietnamese speaking styles.

Feedback Report

After you finish a scenario, you receive a detailed feedback report that includes:

  • Vocabulary used — a list of words and phrases you used correctly
  • New vocabulary — words introduced during the conversation that you may want to review
  • Grammar corrections — specific sentences where your grammar could be improved, with explanations
  • Fluency score — an overall rating of how naturally you communicated

You can revisit past reports anytime from your practice history.

How Is This Different from the AI Tutor?

The AI Tutor is a free-form chat where you can ask any question, practice any topic, or get explanations about Vietnamese grammar and culture. It is flexible and open-ended.

Scenario Practice is structured. You enter a specific situation with a clear context, a character to interact with, and a goal to accomplish (like successfully ordering a meal). This focused format helps you build confidence for real-world situations you will actually encounter in Vietnam.

Both tools complement each other — use the AI Tutor to learn and ask questions, then use Scenario Practice to put your skills to the test.
