Understanding the SVFF Course Structure
Every course on SVFF follows a clear, consistent structure designed to help you build skills step by step. Whether you're studying a textbook course, a video course, or a mixed-format course, the building blocks are the same.
Course Types
SVFF offers three types of courses:
- Textbook Courses — built around a structured digital textbook. Each unit covers new vocabulary, grammar, and cultural notes with written content and images. These are the core curriculum courses.
- Video Courses — taught through recorded video lessons. Great for learners who prefer watching and listening over reading. Each video includes subtitles and follow-along exercises.
- Mixed Courses — combine textbook content with video lessons. You get the depth of written material plus the engagement of video explanations.
The Course Hierarchy: Courses, Units, Lessons, Activities
Think of it like a book with chapters:
| Level | What It Contains | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Course | The full programme for one level | Level 01 — Beginner Vietnamese |
| Unit | A chapter covering one topic area | Unit 3 — At the Market |
| Lesson | The teaching content within a unit | Lesson: Buying Fruit |
| Activities | Interactive exercises to practise what you learned | Vocabulary Matching, Listening Quiz |
Each course typically has around 13 units, and each unit contains one or more lessons followed by several activities.
Activity Types
Activities are where the real learning happens. SVFF includes a wide variety of activity types to keep practice engaging:
- Vocabulary — flashcard-style drills, matching exercises, and word-picture association
- Grammar — fill-in-the-blank, sentence reordering, and multiple-choice grammar checks
- Reading — comprehension passages with questions to test understanding
- Listening — audio clips with questions, dictation exercises, and dialogue practice
- Quizzes — timed and untimed tests that combine multiple skill areas
- Games — Connections, Word Quest, and other interactive vocabulary games
Progress Tracking
SVFF tracks your progress automatically. On each course page, you'll see:
- A completion percentage for the overall course
- Green checkmarks on completed units and activities
- A Continue button that takes you to exactly where you left off
Your progress syncs across devices, so you can study on your laptop at home and continue on your phone during a commute.
Southern vs Northern Dialect
SVFF courses primarily teach Southern Vietnamese (giọng miền Nam), which is the dialect spoken in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. This is because most of our teachers are from the south, and it's the dialect you'll hear most often if you visit or live in southern Vietnam.
However, where relevant, courses include notes on Northern pronunciation differences so you can recognise both dialects. Listening activities occasionally feature Northern speakers to build your comprehension across regions.
What Order Should I Follow?
We strongly recommend working through units in order, from Unit 1 to the final unit. Each unit builds on vocabulary and grammar from previous units. Skipping ahead can leave gaps that make later content harder to follow.
Within each unit, complete the lesson first, then do all the activities before moving on. This ensures you practise what you've just learned while it's fresh.
