Flashcards & Spaced Repetition — How to Study Smarter

Learn Vocabulary the Science-Backed Way

SVFF uses spaced repetition (the SM-2 algorithm) to help you remember Vietnamese vocabulary long-term. Instead of cramming, you review words at scientifically optimised intervals — right before you're about to forget them.

Getting Started

  1. Go to svff.online/flashcards
  2. You'll see your flashcard decks — each deck contains vocabulary cards
  3. Click "Study Now" on any deck with due cards, or click "Study All Due" at the top to review everything at once

Understanding Your Deck Dashboard

At the top of the flashcards page, you'll see four key stats:

  • Due Today — cards that are ready for review right now (shown in red if you have any)
  • Cards Learned — total cards you've studied across all decks
  • Accuracy — your overall correct rate (green if 70% or above)
  • Day Streak — how many consecutive days you've studied (keep the fire alive!)

Each deck card shows a progress ring — the circle fills up as you master more cards. You'll also see how many cards are due and when you last studied.

How a Study Session Works

  1. A Vietnamese word or phrase appears on the card
  2. Try to remember the English meaning before flipping
  3. Click the card (or press Space) to reveal the answer
  4. Rate how well you remembered it using the four buttons:
ButtonKeyboardWhat It MeansWhat Happens
Again (red)1I forgot completelyCard comes back very soon
Hard (orange)2I struggled to rememberCard returns in a short interval
Good (green)3I got it rightCard interval increases normally
Easy (blue)4I knew it instantlyCard won't return for a long time

How Spaced Repetition Works

The system tracks each card individually. When you rate a card:

  • "Again" → the card resets and you'll see it again within minutes
  • "Good" → the interval doubles (e.g., 1 day → 2 days → 4 days → 8 days)
  • "Easy" → the interval jumps even further ahead

Over time, cards you know well appear less frequently, while difficult cards keep coming back until you master them. This is why it's important to study every day — even 5 minutes keeps the system working optimally.

After Your Study Session

You'll see a results screen with:

  • Accuracy ring — your percentage correct for this session
  • Cards reviewed, correct answers, and time spent
  • A breakdown of correct vs. needs-more-practice cards

Score 80% or above and you'll even get a confetti celebration!

Tips for Better Results

  • Study daily — even 5 minutes keeps your streak alive and the algorithm effective
  • Be honest with ratings — pressing "Easy" on a card you half-remembered will push it too far away
  • Use the audio button — click the speaker icon to hear Southern Vietnamese pronunciation while studying
  • Don't skip "Again" cards — they're the ones you need most
  • Study all decks together — the "Study All Due" button mixes cards from different topics, which improves retention

Where Do Decks Come From?

Flashcard decks are created by your teacher or generated automatically from your 1-on-1 lessons (if you have SVFF Plus). You can also find public decks shared by other teachers.
