You’ll learn

  • Answer the Monday question — Cuối tuần rồi đi đâu chơi? — with a real story
  • Glue a story together with trước tiên, sau đó, xong, cuối cùng
  • Talk past and future: hồi mới qua, rồi, định, sẽ
  • Invite someone out: Hay là mình đi chung? — and accept: Đi liền!

The story

Monday, the office coffee corner. Ben — smoothie survivor, hủ tiếu customer, now an A2 storyteller — faces Trúc, his coworker and self-appointed Monday interviewer. His weekend had a movie, a snail feast, a walking street… and one classic Sài Gòn mistake involving rain.

Conversation

Trúc Ben! Where'd you go last weekend that you look dead tired on a Monday?
Ben Oh, my weekend was… a long one. Want to hear it?
Trúc Of course! Tell it — I need a fun story to start the week.
Ben Okay. Saturday night, first I watched a movie with some friends in District 1.
Trúc What movie? Any good?
Ben A Vietnamese action movie. I understood maybe seventy percent — still loved it. After that we went for snails in District 4.
Trúc Snails! Textbook move! You can REALLY eat snails?
Ben Sure can! When I first arrived I was scared of them — now I'm hooked. Garlic-butter sweet snails… I get hungry just thinking about it.
Trúc Look at you! Then what?
Ben Then we strolled Nguyễn Huệ walking street, photos and everything. So fun. But in the end… the sky just dumped on us.
Trúc Disaster! Did you bring your raincoat?
Ben Of course not! Left it at home. By the time I rode back to the hẻm I was soaked like a skinned mouse. Slept the entire Sunday.
Trúc You poor thing! Sounds worth it though. Okay, how about this — this weekend I'm planning coffee in Thảo Điền. Why don't you come along?
Ben I'm in! But this time… I WILL remember the raincoat.

Vocabulary

How it works

The story spine: trước tiên → sau đó → xong → cuối cùng

Four signposts that carry any story: time first (tối thứ bảy), then the glue word, then the event. Time, glue, event — the Vietnamese storytelling sandwich.

Past and future: hồi / rồi vs định / sẽ

Hồi opens a back-then story (hồi mới qua); rồi marks what already happened or changed (ghiền rồi). For plans: định (intend to) and sẽ (will).

Hay là…? — the invitation

Hay là opens a friendly suggestion; đi chung means together; accept with Đi liền! Decline softly with Thôi để lần sau nghen.

Take these with you

  • Where'd you go last weekend? (the Monday question)
  • And then what? (keep a story alive)
  • Oh no — disaster!
  • Soaked to the bone!
  • How about we go together? — I'm in!

HostPodcast number one — Last weekend, where did you go? — Cuối tuần rồi đi đâu chơi?
HostHello everybody, my name is Vy and I will be your host today. Chào mừng đến với chương trình A2! If you finished our A1 series — welcome back, and yes, that is exactly who you think it is in today's story. If you're just joining: at A2, we speak more Vietnamese, the conversations run at real speed from the first listen, and you learn to do the thing that makes you a real speaker: telling little stories about your life.
HostBecause that is today's superpower: the Monday conversation. Cuối tuần rồi đi đâu? — where did you go last weekend? Every office, every classroom, every cà phê in Việt Nam opens the week with this question. Today you will learn to answer it with a real story — with a beginning, a middle, a disaster, and an ending — using the four little words that glue Vietnamese stories together: trước tiên, sau đó, xong, cuối cùng.
HostOur story: remember Ben? Smoothie survivor, hủ tiếu customer, hẻm resident. Ben's Vietnamese has grown up — and today he sits at the office coffee corner with Trúc, his coworker, the person who has appointed herself his Monday interviewer. Ben had a very Sài Gòn weekend: a movie, a snail feast, a walking street — and one classic mistake involving rain. Listen at natural speed. Count the sequence words if you can.
Conversation cue Dialogue — natural speed
Ben told a whole weekend — with a plot twist and everything — and did you catch the glue? Trước tiên… sau đó… xong… cuối cùng. Four signposts, one story. Let's build your own kit now, piece by piece.
HostFirst — the Monday question itself: Cuối tuần rồi anh đi đâu chơi? Cuối tuần — the weekend. Rồi after it — that's the past: last weekend, the weekend that already happened. And đi đâu chơi — literally go where play — go out where? Chơi turns any outing into fun. Cuối tuần rồi.
Your turncuối tuần rồi
Your turncuối tuần rồi anh đi đâu chơi
HostAnd Trúc's little jab: nhìn mệt xỉu vậy — you look dead tired! Mệt — tired, you know it. Xỉu — to faint. Mệt xỉu — so tired you could faint — the South's favorite exaggeration. Mệt xỉu.
Your turnmệt xỉu
HostNow the four story glues. Number one: trước tiên — first of all. Every good weekend story starts here. Trước tiên.
Your turntrước tiên
HostNumber two: sau đó — after that. Sau đó.
Your turnsau đó
HostNumber three — the busiest little word of spoken Vietnamese: xong — done, finished, and-then. You met xong rồi — done! — in A1. In a story, xong opens the next chapter: xong tụi anh đi ăn ốc — then we went to eat snails. Xong.
Your turnxong
HostNumber four: cuối cùng — finally, in the end. Where the plot twist lives. Cuối cùng.
Your turncuối cùng
HostSay the whole spine with me now — feel how a story hangs on it: trước tiên… sau đó… xong… cuối cùng.
Your turntrước tiên, sau đó, xong, cuối cùng
HostNow the weekend activities. Đi coi phim — to go watch a movie. Coi — the Southern watch — the North says a different word, but your cinema is in Sài Gòn: coi phim. Coi phim.
Your turnđi coi phim
HostBen watched phim hành động — an action movie — and understood bảy chục phần trăm — seventy percent. There's your street math from A1 — bảy chục — moonlighting as a percentage! Phần trăm — percent. Bảy chục phần trăm.
Your turnphần trăm
Your turnbảy chục phần trăm
HostThen — the true Sài Gòn nightlife: ăn ốc — eating snails. Not a snack. A ritual. Tables on the sidewalk, a mountain of shells, two hours of talk. When Trúc shouts đúng bài luôn — that's textbook! exactly the right move! — she means: a movie then ốc IS the correct Sài Gòn weekend. Ăn ốc.
Your turnăn ốc
Your turnđúng bài luôn
HostBen's snail journey has a beautiful arc: hồi mới qua anh sợ lắm — when I first came over, I was scared. Hồi — back when — the past-story word. Hồi mới qua — back when I'd just arrived. And now? Anh ghiền rồi — I'm hooked! Ghiền — addicted, the Southern way. First sợ, then ghiền — the official timeline of every foreigner and every Vietnamese dish. Hồi mới qua.
Your turnhồi mới qua
Your turnghiền
HostNext stop: phố đi bộ — the walking street. Nguyễn Huệ — the big one, downtown. Đi bộ — to walk. And Ben's phrase chụp hình các kiểu — taking photos, all kinds of ways — các kiểu tacks onto anything young people do: ăn các kiểu, chơi các kiểu — and everything in between. Phố đi bộ.
Your turnphố đi bộ
Your turnchụp hình các kiểu
HostAnd then — the twist: trời mưa cái ào. There is the Southern sound-effect grammar from our C1 friends — cái plus a noise. Ào — the whoosh of sudden rain. Trời mưa cái ào — the sky just dumped. In mùa mưa, this sentence is daily news. Trời mưa cái ào.
Your turntrời mưa cái ào
HostTrúc's reaction: Thôi xong! — literally stop, done — meaning: oh no, it's over, disaster! The funniest little idiom of trouble. Someone forgets their keys? Thôi xong. Rain and no raincoat? Thôi xong. Thôi xong.
Your turnthôi xong
HostThe thing Ben forgot: áo mưa — the raincoat. Áo — clothing item, you know áo xanh. Mưa — rain. In Sài Gòn, the plastic raincoat under the motorbike seat is a law of survival. Đem theo — to bring along. Anh có đem áo mưa theo hông? Áo mưa.
Your turnáo mưa
Your turnđem áo mưa theo
HostAnd Ben's answer — pure Southern sass: Đem gì mà đem! — bring WHAT — meaning: of course I didn't! That gì mà pattern flips any verb into ironic denial: Ngủ gì mà ngủ! Học gì mà học! File it away — it's delicious. Đem gì mà đem.
Your turnđem gì mà đem
HostThe consequence — one of the best idioms in the language: ướt như chuột lột — soaked like a skinned mouse. Drenched to the bone. Every Sài Gòn person has been a chuột lột at least once per mùa mưa. Ướt như chuột lột.
Your turnướt như chuột lột
HostAnd the recovery: nằm nhà ngủ nguyên ngày — lay at home and slept the entire day. Nguyên — whole, entire: nguyên ngày, nguyên tuần, nguyên nồi hủ tiếu. Nguyên ngày.
Your turnnằm nhà ngủ nguyên ngày
HostLast block — the future! Trúc plans: cuối tuần này em định đi Thảo Điền. Cuối tuần này — THIS weekend — this time rồi is gone, because it hasn't happened yet. Định — to plan to, to intend. Em định đi — I'm planning to go. Định.
Your turnđịnh
Your turncuối tuần này em định đi uống cà phê
HostAnd the invitation — the phrase that will fill your Vietnamese social calendar: Hay là anh đi chung luôn đi? Hay là — how about, or maybe. Đi chung — go together. Hay là mình đi chung — how about we go together? Say yes to this sentence every time. Hay là.
Your turnhay là
Your turnhay là mình đi chung
HostAnd to accept: Đi liền! — with our old friend liền — right away, I'm in! And Ben's final promise, in the future with sẽ: lần này anh sẽ nhớ đem áo mưa — this time I WILL remember the raincoat. Sẽ — will. Growth, các bạn. Character growth. Sẽ.
Your turnđi liền
Your turnanh sẽ nhớ đem áo mưa
HostNow let's analyze the conversation with me, line by line.
Trúc ×2Anh Ben! Cuối tuần rồi anh đi đâu chơi mà thứ hai nhìn mệt xỉu vậy?
HostThe full Monday opener: last weekend, where'd you go — that you look dead tired on Monday? That mà in the middle links the two: so tired THAT. Trúc is a professional Monday interviewer.
Ben ×2Chào Trúc! Trời, cuối tuần của anh… dài lắm nghen. Em muốn nghe hông?
HostCuối tuần của anh dài lắm — my weekend was LONG. And the storyteller's hook: em muốn nghe hông? — wanna hear it? Always make them ask. A1 graduates will notice: Ben's hông game is automatic now.
Trúc ×2Muốn chớ! Kể đi anh, em đang cần chuyện vui đầu tuần nè.
HostMuốn chớ! — of course I do! — that chớ is the Southern "duh". Kể đi — tell it! Kể — to tell a story — your new favorite verb. Đang cần — currently need: đang marks right-now. Chuyện vui — a fun story.
Ben ×2Rồi. Tối thứ bảy, trước tiên anh đi coi phim với mấy người bạn ở Quận 1.
HostStory ignition: time first — tối thứ bảy, Saturday night — then glue word one — trước tiên — then the event. Time, glue, event: that's the Vietnamese storytelling sandwich. Mấy người bạn — a few friends.
Trúc ×2Coi phim gì vậy? Hay hông?
HostThe listener's job: little questions. Phim gì — what movie? Hay hông? — was it good? Hay — good, entertaining — for movies, music, stories. Keep your listener noises ready: vậy hả? rồi sao? hay hông?
Ben ×2Phim hành động Việt Nam đó. Anh hiểu được… chắc bảy chục phần trăm à, mà vẫn thấy hay lắm. Sau đó tụi anh đi ăn ốc ở Quận 4.
HostHiểu được bảy chục phần trăm — understood maybe seventy percent — chắc softens it to "probably", à shrugs it smaller. Mà vẫn thấy hay — but still found it great. That is the A2 spirit, các bạn. Then glue two — sau đó — and tụi anh — we, my group — the Southern casual we.
Trúc ×2Ốc! Đúng bài luôn! Anh ăn được ốc thiệt hả?
HostĐúng bài luôn — textbook move! And the doubt: ăn được ốc thiệt hả? — you can REALLY eat snails? Thiệt — the Southern real/really — thiệt hả, thiệt chớ, nói thiệt. Được after a verb — can, be able to.
Ben ×2Thiệt chớ! Hồi mới qua anh sợ lắm, mà giờ anh ghiền rồi. Ốc hương xào bơ tỏi… nghĩ tới là đói bụng lại liền.
HostThe mini-arc: hồi mới qua — back when I arrived — sợ lắm, then giờ — now — ghiền rồi. Past to present in one breath — that rồi marks the change of state. And ốc hương xào bơ tỏi — sweet snails stir-fried in garlic butter — nghĩ tới là đói bụng lại liền: just thinking of it makes me hungry again. Same, Ben. Same.
Trúc ×2Ghê chưa! Vậy xong rồi sao nữa?
HostGhê chưa! — look at YOU! — impressed, teasing. And the story-pulling question: xong rồi sao nữa? — and then what? Learn this to keep any story alive. Rồi sao nữa?
Ben ×2Xong tụi anh đi bộ ra phố đi bộ Nguyễn Huệ chơi, chụp hình các kiểu. Vui lắm. Mà cuối cùng… trời mưa cái ào luôn em.
HostGlue three — xong — walking street, photos các kiểu, vui lắm. Then glue four with the twist: mà cuối cùng — but in the end — trời mưa cái ào. Hear how the story tightens right before the disaster? That pause before trời mưa — that's craft.
Trúc ×2Thôi xong! Anh có đem áo mưa theo hông?
HostThôi xong! — disaster confirmed. Then the exact question every Vietnamese person asks at this point in any rain story: có đem áo mưa theo hông — did you bring the raincoat? The nation runs on this question half the year.
Ben ×2Đem gì mà đem! Anh quên ở nhà rồi. Chạy xe về tới hẻm là ướt như chuột lột luôn. Chủ nhật anh nằm nhà ngủ nguyên ngày.
HostĐem gì mà đem! — of course not! Quên ở nhà rồi — left it at home. Ướt như chuột lột — soaked like a skinned mouse — and the aftermath: Sunday, nguyên ngày of sleep. A full tragedy in four sentences. Beautiful.
Trúc ×2Trời ơi, tội nghiệp! Mà nghe cũng đáng lắm đó chớ. Thôi vầy nè — cuối tuần này em định đi Thảo Điền uống cà phê. Hay là anh đi chung luôn đi?
HostTội nghiệp — you poor thing! Nghe cũng đáng lắm — sounds worth it though — đáng, worth it, straight from Chú Bảy's vocabulary. Thôi vầy nè — okay, how about this — the plan-proposing opener. Then định for the plan and hay là for the invite. This one line is your entire social toolkit.
Ben ×2Dạ đi liền! Mà lần này… anh sẽ nhớ đem áo mưa.
HostĐi liền! — instantly in. Lần này — this time — anh sẽ nhớ — I WILL remember. Sẽ, the future marker, sealing a lesson learned the wet way.
HostOne more time — the whole Monday conversation at natural speed. This listen, follow just the four glue words and feel the story's skeleton underneath.
