Comparison & Superlative — Hơn, Bằng, So Với, Nhất

So sánh — hơn, bằng, so với, nhất

Vietnamese comparison is refreshingly simple: you don't conjugate adjectives, you just drop a small word between them. Use hơn for "more than", bằng for "as ... as", and nhất for "the most". Negative comparisons use không ... bằng or kém ... hơn. To soften or sharpen the gap, add một chút (a little) or nhiều (a lot). For formal written contrasts, use so với (compared to). This guide walks A2–B1 learners through every Southern-style pattern with short, real-life examples.

Comparing things in Vietnamese is one of the friendliest pieces of grammar you'll meet. There are no endings to add — no taller, tallest, more beautiful, most beautiful. You keep the adjective exactly the same and just slip a tiny word next to it. Once you learn four words — hơn, bằng, nhất, and so với — you can compare almost anything in your day.

This guide is built for A2–B1 learners. Every example below is the Southern flavour of Vietnamese you'd actually hear in Saigon, the Mekong, or on the phone with a southern teacher.
