Definition

What it means

English

The 'thì...thì...' frame is a parallel-clause structure used to list contrasting situations side by side — 'Group X (does/is) this, while group Y (does/is) that.' It's the smooth way to handle 'some...others...' in Vietnamese, much cleaner than running separate sentences. The frame works for places ('chỗ thì A, chỗ thì B' — some places A, others B), people ('người thì A, người thì B' — some people A, others B), and things ('cái thì A, cái thì B' — some are A, others are B). Each 'thì' marks the start of a clause and signals 'as for this one...' The contrast can be sharp ('one is rich, one is poor') or just descriptive ('some go to France, some to Australia'). It's a workhorse pattern for survey-style descriptions where you want to capture variety without listing each item one by one.
