Quantifier set — used in instruction and careful speech.

Definition

What it means

English

- Tất cả, các, mọi: denote plurality of the whole group, implying no comparison. The noun that follows them can go without any attribute. - Cả only goes with such collective nouns as gia đình (family), trường (school), lớp (class), nước (country)... and the time-indicating nouns: ngày (day/date), tháng (month), năm (year)... - Những denotes plurality of a part of a group, implying to compare it with the rest in the group. Thus the main noun must be followed by an attribute to make it distinct from the other parts.

Usage notes
Five quantifiers: 'tất cả / các / mọi' = all (whole group, no comparison). 'cả' = whole (collective nouns: gia đình, trường, lớp, ngày, năm). 'những' = some / those (subset, requires modifier). Each picks a different framing of 'all/some'.
