What it means
A two-part conversational frame that wraps an adjective or verb to ask, with a mix of surprise and mild exasperation, why something is so extreme. The literal pieces translate as 'what are you doing that you're so...?' but the meaning is closer to 'why on earth are you so...?' or 'why is this taking so...?'. It carries a familiar, almost teasing tone, so it lives mostly between people who already know each other. The 'thế' at the tail belongs to Northern Vietnamese; Southern speakers swap it for 'vậy', which gives the same shape but a softer, warmer cadence. Tone of voice carries most of the meaning — said with a grin, it teases; said sharply, it complains.
