Day-of-week vocabulary — essential.

Definition

What it means

English

Vietnamese days are formed by "thứ + cardinal", with two important irregulars: WEDNESDAY = "thứ TƯ" (NOT thứ bốn — even when the number 4 is written, you spell "tư"); and SUNDAY = "chủ nhật" (NOT thứ một / *thứ nhất — Sunday is the exception that breaks the pattern). The week starts on Monday in Vietnamese reckoning.

Tiếng Việt

Ngày trong tuần = thứ + số đếm. Hai trường hợp đặc biệt: WEDNESDAY = "thứ TƯ" (không thứ bốn); SUNDAY = "chủ nhật" (không thứ một). Tuần bắt đầu từ thứ hai.

Usage notes
Days form by 'thứ + cardinal'. Two critical irregulars: WEDNESDAY = 'thứ TƯ' (never thứ bốn even though it's 4); SUNDAY = 'chủ nhật' (NOT thứ một). Vietnamese week starts MONDAY. The 'tư' rule applies broadly: thứ tư, mùng bốn (but mùng tư in some dating contexts), tháng tư.
