What it means
The core yes/no question frame. It wraps the verb or adjective: "có" goes before it, "không" comes at the very end — "có V/ADJ không?" = "do you …? / is it …?". Answer "có" (yes) or "không" (no).
Khung câu hỏi yes/no căn bản nhất. Nó kẹp lấy động từ hoặc tính từ: "có" đứng trước, "không" đứng cuối — "có V/tính từ không?" = "có … không?". Trả lời "có" (có) hoặc "không" (không).

The frame that makes a yes/no question
This is the workhorse of Vietnamese yes/no questions. You don't change word order and you don't conjugate anything — you just wrap the verb or adjective:
> có + verb / adjective + không ?
- Em đói. → Em có đói không? — You're hungry. → Are you hungry?
- Bạn đi học. → Bạn có đi học không? — You go to class. → Are you going to class?
có sits right before the thing being questioned; không lands at the very end of the sentence. Everything else stays put.
How to answer
This is the one frame with a clean built-in answer pair:
- Có. — yes.
- Không. — no.
You can echo the verb for a fuller reply: Có, em đói. / Không, em no rồi. Never answer this frame with rồi/chưa — those belong to the đã … chưa ("…yet?") frame, not this one.
The "have" trap — use only ONE có
When the main verb is itself có meaning "to have", you do not double it up. One có does both jobs:
- Em có tiền không? — Do you have money? ✅
Em có có tiền không?❌
So "có nhiều thời gian" → *"Em có nhiều thời gian không?", never "có có"*.
Casual reductions
In fast, friendly speech the front có often drops, leaving just không at the end:
- Đói không? — Hungry?
- Đi không? — Coming?
And the final không itself frequently reduces to hông / hôn / hơm in Southern speech:
- Đi hông? — Coming or not?
Both the full frame and the clipped version are correct — the full có … không is just a touch more careful or polite.
Don't confuse the frames
- có … không? → present/general: "do you …? / is it …?" — answer có / không.
- đã … chưa? → completion: "have you … yet?" — answer rồi / chưa.
- có phải … không? → confirming a fact/identity: "is it true that …?" — answer phải / không phải.
Picking the right frame is half of asking a good Vietnamese question.
Don't: double the "have" verb — Em có có xe không?
Do: one "có" does both jobs — Em có xe không?
Don't: answer with rồi/chưa — Q: Em có đói không? A: Rồi.
Do: answer the frame's own pair — Có. / Không.
Don't: drop the final "không" and keep the front one — Em có đói? sounds unfinished.
Do: keep "không" at the end (or drop the front "có"): Em có đói không? / Đói không?
