What it means

Illustration for the Vietnamese grammar pattern ai
English

"Ai" is "who" AND "whom" — one word for both. Its position shows the role: as subject it sits at the front ("Ai gọi bạn?"), as object it sits after the verb ("Bạn mời ai?"). After a preposition, keep the preposition: "đi với ai".

Tiếng Việt

"Ai" vừa là "who" vừa là "whom" — một từ cho cả hai. Vị trí cho biết vai trò: làm chủ ngữ thì đứng trước ("Ai gọi bạn?"), làm tân ngữ thì đứng sau động từ ("Bạn mời ai?"). Sau giới từ thì giữ giới từ: "đi với ai".
