What it means
The 'đi ... về' structure is a Vietnamese verb sandwich that describes a complete round trip — the speaker goes out somewhere and returns home or to the starting point. 'Đi' opens the action of leaving, the middle slot holds the destination or purpose, and 'về' closes the trip with the return. This is much more elegant than English's 'I went to X and came back', and it carries an inherent 'just finished' feeling when paired with 'mới' (just now). The frame is so compact that it forms many fixed expressions: 'đi chợ về' (back from the market), 'đi làm về' (back from work), 'đi học về' (back from school), 'đi công tác về' (back from a business trip). When someone walks in the door, 'mới đi đâu về?' is the standard greeting — 'where did you just come back from?'. The structure is rigid: never put 'về' before the destination, and never split with too many words between 'đi' and 'về' or the sandwich falls apart.
Cấu trúc "đi...về" dùng để nói về việc đi tới một nơi nào đó rồi quay trở lại chỗ cũ.
