🔊 Understanding “T” vs. “TH” in Vietnamese

1️⃣ How to Pronounce “T”

🔹 The “T” sound in Vietnamese is similar to the English “T” in “stop” (not “top”).
🔹 When pronouncing “T”, your tongue touches the roof of your mouth (just behind the upper front teeth).
🔹 It is NOT aspirated, meaning no air is released from your mouth.

✅ Examples with “T”:

  • Té (fall) → Bé Tú bị té. (Little Tú fell.)
  • Tám (eight) → Hai em có tám cái tủ to. (They have eight big cabinets.)
  • Tỷ (billion) → Anh Tí muốn có tám tỷ đô la Mỹ. (Anh Tí wants to have eight billion U.S. dollars.)

2️⃣ How to Pronounce “TH”

🔹 The “TH” sound is similar to the English “T” in “top” but with a strong burst of air.
🔹 When pronouncing “TH”, the tongue position is the same as “T,” but more air is pushed out.

✅ Examples with “TH”:

  • Thỏ (rabbit) → Hai con thỏ thích ăn cỏ. (Two rabbits like eating grass.)
  • Thư (letter) → Thứ ba, chị Thư đi thi tiếng Việt. (On Tuesday, chị Thư took a Vietnamese exam.)
  • Tha thứ (forgive) → Bà Thu thề không tha thứ cho Thanh. (Ms. Thu swore not to forgive Thanh.)

📊 Comparison: T vs. TH

T (No Air)TH (With Air)
Tí (nickname for a person)Thí (to test)
Tỏ (to show)Thỏ (rabbit)
Tà (evil)Thà (rather)
Tú (a name)Thư (letter)

📌 Tip: Hold your hand in front of your mouth while saying these words. If you feel a burst of air, you are pronouncing TH correctly! If there’s no air, then it’s T!
