Welcome to Our Vietnamese Learning Series!
Hello everyone! 👋 We are Thảo Nguyên and Hiệp Mẫu, Vietnamese teachers at SVFF. Today, we’re diving into an essential topic for Vietnamese learners: Motion Verbs.
Motion verbs are commonly used in daily conversations to describe moving from one place to another, such as going, coming, entering, exiting, and traveling. By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to understand and correctly use Vietnamese motion verbs in real-life situations!
🎬 Sample Conversation
To see how motion verbs are used, let’s watch a conversation between two friends:
🧑 Friend 1: Hôm nay trời lạnh quá, tao muốn về nhà ngủ. (It’s so cold today, I just want to go home and sleep.)
👨 Friend 2: Bộ mới có 4 giờ mà ngủ gì! Đi công viên chơi game với tao đi! (It’s only 4 PM! Come to the park and play games with me!)
🧑 Friend 1: Trời, mới ăn trưa xong, giờ tới công viên ăn kem? Bộ mày không thấy no hả? (We just finished lunch, and now you want to eat ice cream at the park? Aren’t you full?)
👨 Friend 2: Tại công ty tao á, văn phòng ở tầng năm mà không có thang máy. Tao phải đi lên đi xuống mấy lần một ngày! Có mấy tháng mà tao tụt gần mấy ký rồi! (At my company, my office is on the 5th floor, and there’s no elevator. I have to go up and down all day! I’ve lost a few kilos in just a few months!)
🧑 Friend 1: Vậy thì phải ăn bù lại chứ! Mà ăn kem cần gì phải tới công viên, bây giờ mình đi vô cửa hàng tiện lợi mua kem rồi ra đây ngồi ăn cũng được mà! (Then you should eat more to make up for it! But we don’t need to go to the park for ice cream—we can just buy it at the convenience store and eat it here!)
👨 Friend 2: Cũng được! (Sounds good!)
📖 Understanding the Verb “Đi” (To Go)
The most basic motion verb in Vietnamese is “đi”, which means "to go" or "to travel". It can be used:
1️⃣ Without a preposition when talking about cities, countries, or continents:

- Đi Mỹ (Go to the U.S.) → Chị Lệ sắp đi Mỹ rồi. (Chị Lệ is going to the U.S. soon.)
- Đi Châu Phi (Go to Africa) → Anh Linh đi Châu Phi du lịch. (Anh Linh is traveling to Africa.)
2️⃣ With a preposition (đến, tới, vào, ra, lên, xuống, qua, lại, về) when talking about smaller places:
- Đi tới nhà bạn (Go to a friend’s house) → Bình đi tới nhà bạn ăn tối. (Bình went to his friend’s house for dinner.)
- Đi vô nhà (Go inside the house) → Em đi vô nhà chơi. (I’m going inside the house to hang out.)
