Learning How to Ask for Directions in Vietnamese

Welcome to SVFF’s Vietnamese Learning Series!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to another lesson in our SVFF Vietnamese learning series. If you're a foreigner looking to improve your Vietnamese, especially in the Southern dialect, you're in the right place! Today, we will learn how to ask for and give directions in Vietnamese, using common phrases and practical examples.

1. Sample Conversation: Asking for Directions

Here’s a simple conversation where someone is asking for directions to a supermarket:

🔹 Person A: Anh ơi, cho em hỏi, ở gần đây có cái siêu thị nào không?
(Excuse me, is there a supermarket nearby?)

🔹 Person B: Gần đây không có siêu thị, chỉ có cái hàng tiện lợi ở bên kia đường thôi. Em băng qua đường cái là tới rồi.
(There’s no supermarket nearby, only a convenience store across the street. You just need to cross the road.)

🔹 Person A: Em có vô đó rồi mà không có thứ em cần. Anh biết siêu thị ở đâu không?
(I already went there, but they don’t have what I need. Do you know where a supermarket is?)

🔹 Person B: Bây giờ em đi thẳng cái đường này tới bùng binh, em quẹo trái, đi thêm 500m nữa tới ngã tư, rẽ phải, sau đó đi ngang qua công viên, đi thêm 500m nữa là tới.
(Go straight down this road until you reach a roundabout, turn left, go 500m to the intersection, turn right, then go past the park. Walk another 500m, and you'll be there.)

🔹 Person A: Cảm ơn anh!
(Thank you!)

2. Common Phrases for Giving Directions

To make it easier for you, here are some essential Vietnamese phrases for giving directions:

  • Em quẹo phải đi thêm 200m là tới ngân hàng. (Turn right and go 200m to the bank.)

➡️ Going Straight

🔹 Đi thẳng – Go straight

Example:

  • Chị quẹo trái vô đường Nguyễn Trãi, sau đó đi thẳng là tới. (Turn left onto Nguyễn Trãi Street, then go straight to arrive.)

🔹 Băng qua đường – Cross the street

Example:

➡️ Stopping & Arriving

🔹 Dừng lại – Stop
🔹 Tới nơi – Arrive
