Hi everyone! In today’s tutorial, we’ll be learning how to type in Vietnamese using the two most common input methods: Telex and VNI. Whether you’re using Windows or Mac, I’ll guide you through setting up your device and mastering these typing systems.
Step 1: Setting Up Your Device
For Windows users, you’ll need a typing software called Unikey. It’s free and allows easy Vietnamese typing. You can download it online and install it. After installation, you’ll see the Unikey interface. You can switch to English if preferred by clicking the language button.
For Mac users, go to Keyboard Settings, add a Vietnamese keyboard, and you’re ready to go!
Step 2: Choosing the Right Input Method
There are two main ways to type Vietnamese: Telex and VNI. Both are supported by Unikey, so make sure Vietnamese typing mode is active. Look for the "V" icon in your system tray to confirm that you’re in Vietnamese mode.
Typing with VNI
VNI uses number keys to add diacritics to letters. Here's how it works:
- To type ă, press a8
- For â, press a6
- For đ, press d9
- For ê, press e6
- For ô, press o6
- For ơ, press o7
- For ư, press u7
Tone Marks (VNI):
- Sắc (´): 1
- Huyền (`): 2
- Hỏi (?): 3
- Ngã (~): 4
- Nặng (.): 5
- To remove a tone: 0
Example: To type Việt Nam, you would type: Vie6t5 Nam.
Typing with Telex
Telex uses letter combinations for diacritics:
- ă = aw
- â = aa
- đ = dd
- ê = ee
- ô = oo
- ơ = ow
- ư = uw
Tone Marks (Telex):
- Sắc (´): s
- Huyền (`): f
- Hỏi (?): r
- Ngã (~): x
- Nặng (.): j
- To remove a tone: z
Example: To type Việt Nam, you would type: Vietsj Nam.
Step 3: Quick Setup with Unikey
Open Unikey and select either Telex or VNI as your input method.
- Choose Unicode as the character set (this is standard for Vietnamese).
- Click Expand if you want to explore advanced settings, but for most users, the default settings are perfect.
- Click Close to save your changes.
You’re now ready to start typing!
Step 4: Practicing Typing
Now that you know the basics, let’s practice! Try typing the following sentence:
“Chào mọi người, tôi tên là Tú.”
In VNI:
Cha2o5 mo5i3 ngu7o7i2, to6i5 te6n la2 Tu1.
In Telex:
Chaoj moji nguwowi, tooi teeen laf Tuu.
Final Tips:
- Type the base letter first, then add the diacritic.
- For uppercase letters, hold Shift or enable Caps Lock before typing the base character. The tone marks will be added in lowercase afterward.
