Why Hesitation Techniques Matter

In any language, knowing how to express hesitation naturally can make your conversations smoother and more authentic. Vietnamese is no exception. Using hesitation techniques correctly can help you sound more fluent and give you a moment to think without awkward silences.

Common Hesitation Techniques in Vietnamese

Here are some common phrases used to express hesitation in Vietnamese:

  1. Để coi (Let's see)
  2. Từ từ (Slowly)
  3. Thông thả (Take your time)
  4. Đợi xí (Wait a bit)
  5. Khoan đã (Hold on)

Example Conversation

Let's look at an example from a recent lesson where a couple is choosing a wedding dress:

  • Husband: "Dạ đây á là cái tiệm đồ cưới lớn nhất ở khu vực này á. Giờ thích cái nào giờ cứ lựa đi." ("This is the biggest wedding dress shop in this area. Choose whichever one you like.")
  • Wife: "Chồ chồ chồ cái này cái này được không chồng? Màu tím chung á." ("Honey, what about this one? It's purple.")
  • Husband: "Cái này á thì màu cũng đẹp á. Nhưng mà nó ơi diêm dúa quá. Giờ thử tìm cái nào nó đơn giản hơn coi." ("The color is nice, but it's too flashy. Let's find something simpler.")
  • Wife: "Dạ ây chồng, chồ cái này đi. Cái này á là vợ thấy được nhất á. Kiểu đơn giản mà đẹp nè." ("Honey, try this one. I think this one is the best. It's simple and beautiful.")
  • Husband: "Ừ từ từ để chồng ngắm coi sao. Không tệ nhưng mà nó dài quá. Vợ đi khó lắm á. Lựa cái tàu ngắn thử coi." ("Okay, let me see. Not bad, but it's too long. It will be hard for you to walk. Try a shorter one.")
  • Wife: "Chồng ơi cái gì, vì em thấy cái này là được nhất từ nãy tới giờ luôn nè." ("Honey, what? I think this is the best one so far.")
  • Husband: "Nói thiệt nha, cái này á nó xấu hơn hai cái trước nữa. Giờ chịu khó đi lựa cái khác đi." ("Honestly, this one is uglier than the previous two. Please choose another one.")
  • Wife: "Không có cái nào được hả?" ("Isn't any of them good?")
  • Husband: "Cái này không đẹp thiệt. Mà vợ chịu khó đi lựa cái khác đi." ("This one really isn't nice. Please choose another one.")
  • Wife: "Khoan đã, chồng nghĩ lại rồi. Cái đầu tiên á là ok nhất. Mình lấy cái đó đi, để vợ khỏi mất công đi lựa cái khác." ("Hold on, I changed my mind. The first one was the best. Let's take that one so you don't have to look for another.")

Practicing Hesitation Techniques

Using these hesitation techniques can make your Vietnamese sound more natural and give you time to think during conversations. Try incorporating them into your daily practice. For example:

  • Để coi: "Để coi màu này thì đẹp mà hơi diêm dúa. Đợi xí nha, để vợ thay cái khác." ("Let's see, this color is nice but a bit flashy. Wait a bit, I'll try another one.")
  • Từ từ: "Không gấp, cứ từ từ thôi." ("No rush, just take your time.")
  • Khoan đã: "Khoan đã, chồng nghĩ lại rồi." ("Hold on, I changed my mind.")
