How to Ask Questions in Vietnamese: A Beginner’s Guide

Welcome to SVFF! 🎉 Today, we’re diving into a practical and essential topic for Vietnamese learners: how to ask yes/no questions in Vietnamese. If you want to sound natural in conversations, mastering these structures is a must!

Let’s explore six common ways to ask questions in Vietnamese with examples and practice exercises. 📝

1. Có… không? (Yes/No Questions with Verbs & Adjectives)

This structure is commonly used for questions involving verbs or adjectives. Simply place “có” before the verb or adjective and “không” at the end.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Anh Minh thích uống cà phê. (Minh likes drinking coffee.)
➡️ Question: Anh Minh có thích uống cà phê không? (Does Minh like drinking coffee?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Hôm nay trời lạnh. (Today is cold.)
➡️ Question: Hôm nay trời có lạnh không? (Is it cold today?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Có.
  • No: Không.

2. Có phải… không? (Questions About Identity & Ownership)

This structure is used when asking about someone’s identity, ownership, or categorization. Place “có phải” before the noun and “không” at the end.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Bạn em là sinh viên. (My friend is a student.)
➡️ Question: Bạn em có phải là sinh viên không? (Is your friend a student?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Cái nhà này của ông Hai. (This house belongs to Mr. Hai.)
➡️ Question: Cái nhà này có phải của ông Hai không? (Does this house belong to Mr. Hai?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Phải.
  • No: Không phải.

3. Đã… chưa? (Questions About Past Actions)

This structure is used to ask if something has happened yet. Place “đã” before the verb and “chưa” at the end.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Anh đã nấu cơm xong rồi. (He has finished cooking rice.)
➡️ Question: Anh đã nấu cơm xong chưa? (Has he finished cooking rice yet?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Em chuẩn bị xong rồi. (I have finished preparing.)
➡️ Question: Em đã chuẩn bị xong chưa? (Have you finished preparing yet?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Rồi. (Already.)
  • No: Chưa. (Not yet.)

4. Phải không? (Confirmation Questions)

This is a simple way to confirm information by adding "phải không?" at the end of a statement.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Chị Mary là người Mỹ. (Mary is American.)
➡️ Question: Chị Mary là người Mỹ, phải không? (Mary is American, right?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Ba năm nay 80 tuổi rồi. (My dad is 80 years old.)
➡️ Question: Ba năm nay 80 tuổi rồi, phải không? (My dad is 80 years old, right?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Đúng rồi.
  • No: Không phải.

5. Hả? (Informal Confirmation Questions)

“Hả?” works like “phải không?” but is more informal and conversational. It’s used when you expect agreement from the listener.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Anh thích đi du lịch Huế. (You like traveling to Huế.)
➡️ Question: Anh thích đi du lịch Huế, hả? (You like traveling to Huế, right?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Chị Linh là ca sĩ nổi tiếng. (Linh is a famous singer.)
➡️ Question: Chị Linh là ca sĩ nổi tiếng, hả? (Linh is a famous singer, right?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Đúng rồi.
  • No: Không phải.

6. …được không? (Polite Requests & Permissions)

This phrase is used to ask for permission or make polite requests. Simply state the request and add “được không?” at the end.

Example 1:

➡️ Statement: Anh mua nước giùm em. (Can you buy water for me?)
➡️ Question: Anh mua nước giùm em, được không? (Can you buy water for me, please?)

Example 2:

➡️ Statement: Chị chở em đi học. (Can you take me to school?)
➡️ Question: Chị chở em đi học, được không? (Can you take me to school, please?)

✅ How to answer:

  • Yes: Được.
  • No: Không được.
